Due to the cost of hardwood flooring, users tend to cherish it more. It goes without saying then that, to protect your hardwood flooring and keep it clean, some degree of dedication is necessary. Cleaning hardwood flooring isn’t difficult at all, but doing it right isn’t exactly the simplest thing to do. In fact, due to negligence of some owners, hardwood flooring can very easily be damaged without proper care. Therefore, I hope that this post will convince you (or your domestic helper) to take action and maintain your hardwood flooring (assuming you actually own it). Last point to note before I dive into the main content, I won’t be addressing each type of hardwood specifically, but I personally believe that cleaning engineered hardwood flooring for example, is no different from cleaning Bruce hardwood flooring, or any other type of hardwood flooring. So, with that out of the way, let’s dive into the content.

Daily Job – To Keep Your Floors Free of Scratches

What you should be doing daily is to remove any form of dirt and grime. This is extremely important and should be done daily because of movement in and out of the house. Other ways dirt and grime buildup occurs is through the windows or the doorway if not kept closed. In other words, a well-ventilated location would tend to gather more dirt. Getting rid of this dirt would constitute two things, sweeping and vacuuming. Of course, if you really can’t find the time, then just go with through vacuuming the house or reduce it from daily to maybe three to four times a week. The important thing to note here is that you should use soft bristles for your vacuum so switch out your attachment head before use to avoid scratching your flooring. As for sweeping, using a soft broom helps to remove the dirt in places you just can’t reach with a vacuum cleaner. When that’s done, then you should be fine and ready to move on.
If you wish to minimize the amount of work that needs to be done, try keeping your doorways closed to prevent dirt from entering through the door. On the other hand, you can also get your family to take off their socks and shoes (if you aren’t already doing so) and getting them to clean their feet before entering the house. It might also be beneficial to add a “Welcome” mat in front of the door, which might also need some cleaning and washing from time to time.

Per Three Months – Your Heavy-Duty Arsenal of Cleaning Products

While it may be true that regular cleaning is pretty effective for getting rid of sand and dust, you really don’t want to take chances when cleaning your hardwood flooring. Thus, once every three months, it would be good if you did a complete and thorough cleaning to remove any dirt or grease everywhere from your house. Of course, by using cleaning products, you should be much more efficient and effective in cleaning up.
However, before applying any sort of cleaning product to your flooring, make very sure that it doesn’t contain ammonia and for best results, try to get cleaning products specifically for hardwood flooring. It may cost a tad bit more but believe me, it’s worth spending that extra money on cleaning products than to ruin the finish of your flooring. The mop you use, once again, should be soft to avoid damaging the flooring and another thing to note is that you should add minimal water and use just a little of the cleansing product because the last thing you want happening would be for the water to seep into your hardwood and damage the flooring. If your floor is waxed, then it would be best to consult your manufacturer for more details on the buffing because waxing requires buffing approximately once every 6 months.

Final Tips – Essentials of Cleaning Hardwood Flooring
1. Spilled drinks should be cleaned off right away with a damp or moist cloth then with a dry cloth immediately after.
2. Stains can be removed with wood cleanser added to a little bit of vinegar. Needless to say, dry it off with a wet towel seconds after application of the solution. If still visible, then use sandpaper to scrape the flooring lightly till the stain fades. You would have to wax/add finish to the flooring again after that though, so it would be best to avoid staining the floor.
3. Keep away from high heels and sharp objects that could dent the flooring.
4. If at all possible, shield it from the sun to avoid discoloration.

Ok, that’s all. If you follow the above tips to the tee, then you should have no problem at all keeping your hardwood flooring in tip-top condition. I hope you can take my advice seriously and take good care of your hardwood flooring. Look forward to your success in cleaning hardwood flooring!
